The electrical panel is the backbone of a home's electrical system; its condition directly affects the safety of the entire system. In Canada, the standard voltage is 110 volts. Newer homes typically have a 200-amp electrical panel, which better meets our current power demands. Older homes generally have a 100-amp panel. My friend's house is an older home—and it still uses a fuse panel! A fuse panel indicates the electrical system is over 60 years old and can no longer meet the demands of modern appliances. For example: this house has a pool in the backyard. The pool pump circulates and filters the water and powers the entertainment features, and it draws a significant amount of power. On top of that, the tenant—a non-Chinese renter—loves using the oven for baking, and in summer cranks the air conditioning down to freezing. This causes the fuses to blow frequently, leaving the tenant frustrated. My friend was completely puzzled: "How can the electrical panel already be failing in a house I just bought?!" So I kept educating her: The fuses in an older home's panel only provide short-circuit protection. When high-wattage appliances are used at the same time, the fuse blows. The tenant has to keep replacing fuses, which is also hard on the appliances and causes frequent power outages. We need to upgrade the panel to a circuit-breaker type, which provides short-circuit protection, overload protection, and ground-fault protection, improving the overall safety of the electrical system. Home insurers also encourage homeowners to use circuit-breaker panels because they are safer. If you're simply upgrading from a 100-amp fuse panel to a 100-amp circuit-breaker panel, it's relatively straightforward because the main service conduit and wiring don't need to be replaced. You only need to replace the panel and the meter base. The cost is roughly around $2,000. However, to solve the problem at its root, you need to upgrade to a 200-amp circuit-breaker panel. This involves upgrading the exterior service conduit, the grounding, and the interior wiring. This work requires applying for a building permit from the municipality and scheduling a power shut-off. Costs depend on the complexity of the job, generally ranging from $4,000 to $6,000. Leave specialized work to the specialists.
